Shiffrin one title away from Vonn record

Mikaela Shiffrin has skied to her 81st World Cup triumph to move to within one victory of her US compatriot Lindsey Vonn’s all-time women’s record of 82.

Mikaela Shiffrin has claimed an 81st career World Cup triumph in a Zagreb slalom to move within one of the women’s all-time victory record held by fellow American Lindsey Vonn.

The 27-year-old great triumphed for the fifth time in a row and seventh time overall in the season on Wednesday as she became the Zagreb ‘Snow Queen’ for a record fifth time with a record-extending 51st slalom victory.

She can match Vonn’s 82 top spots in another Zagreb slalom on Thursday. 

Her 81 wins are just five shy of the overall record of 86 victories set by Swedish slalom great Ingemar Stenmark.

“I had so much fun today. I did my best skiing in both runs. I took all the risk I needed. It is an amazing feeling,” Shiffrin said.

She held a slender lead after the first run before destroying the field in the second.

Olympic champion Petra Vlhova of Slovakia missed a fourth straight Zagreb win, trailing by a big margin of 0.76sec but her runner-up finish was her best slalom result of the season.

Anna Swenn Larsson of Sweden was 1.21 seconds off the pace in third place.

Two-time Olympic and six-time world champion Shiffrin has now moved almost 400 points ahead of Vlhova at the top of the World Cup standings en route to what looks sure to be a fifth title.

She won two slaloms early in the season in Levi, Finland, before her current win streak started with a Super-g success in St Moritz, Switzerland, followed by two giant slalom successes and one slalom win last week in Semmering, Austria.
